Lost in the woods. Ten-year-old Emily and her friend go into the woods to play hide and seek, but it takes a dangerous turn when Darcy is kidnapped. In a panic Emily searches for her. The two men come out of the woods and take her too. She realises that she has crossed a line into the deep past. The men from the Watch take her to an abbey and they try to have her adopted as an abandoned child, but she escapes and looks for Darcy.
On the way, she meets Isabel, whose little brother has also been taken from her. Emily agrees to help her. In the search, they face danger and a seemingly impossible task to find and rescue both Darcy and little Gilles in a hostile medieval world that Emily is not prepared for and they must face with courage and determination many obstacles in their way.
